How many times have you told yourself after exercising, "I'll stretch when I get home?"
My guess is once you get through the door, all bets are off! I know stretching is probably the last thing on your mind after a long busy day AND an intense workout, but the rewards are well worth the investment! There are so many benefits in taking some extra time to stretch. And did you know that stretching is just as important as cardio and weight training? Here's why turning into a pretzel is a good thing:
Stretching will help you achieve:
- A greater range of motion: This will help keep your body well balanced, leaving you less prone to falls.
- Increased flexibility: Keeping your muscles elongated helps your muscles stay at peak performance level.
- Improved circulation: This allows your muscles to receive oxygen more efficiently which is a critical component for a quick recovery after your workout.
- Tone in your muscles AND improved posture.
When we workout, our muscles contract, or tighten, so stretching while you are still warm is key. (No stretching while you are cold!) Be sure to stretch within 10 minutes of your workout. Hold each stretch for 30-60 seconds which will give your muscles enough time to lengthen.
Remember!
Stretch slowly without bouncing. Also, NEVER go beyond the point of discomfort. Always LISTEN to your body.
So the next time you make a bee-line for the showers after your workout – take a few minutes to stretch. It takes less time than you think and you'll feel SO much better the next day, we promise!
