Healthy food substitutions are one of the most difficult things to pull off successfully…the huge flavor discrepancies between low-fat and high-fat foods always seem to be the culprit. Not to mention the fact that they also tend to make us cringe. (You can’t fool me with that fat-free frozen yogurt!) But TrainerDiva Christi shows us that it is in fact possible to substitute a healthy food alternative for something that you probably already have in your fridge.
Let me first tell you that my husband is one of the most difficult people to fool with a low calorie/low fat switch-a-roo. I try to be sneaky, but he is always on to me.
Greek yogurt is currently my new food love! Sour cream is no longer welcome in my fridge. There are so many brands and varieties of greek yogurt, but 0% fat free is all I buy, brand isn't important to me.
For two months, plain 0% greek yogurt was on the dinner table in place of sour cream. My family used this sub without any suspicion. Even my husband! I finally told him the truth and he couldn't believe it. Trust me this is one of the best tricks out there.
You can substitute anything that calls for sour cream with 0% greek yogurt. And here’s why you should! Greek Yogurt has no fat, high protein and 20-25% of your daily recommended serving of calcium (for women the calcium factor is just a beautiful thing). And what’s more is that it’s all natural, free of artificial sweeteners, free of rBGH, and gluten free. The list goes on!
For my sweet tooth I grab a vanilla 0% greek yogurt, add a bit of chocolate chips and I'm very satisfied. Before a workout, I also put greek yogurt in my smoothies just to add more protein. If the “plain” taste is not for you, try using 8 oz of plain 0% greek yogurt with one packet of natural Truvia sweetener or just add any kind of fruit you like.
So the next time you’re at the grocery store, don’t forget the greek yogurt!
